Oncology Programme

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, the Oncology Programme is here to support you. The programme helps you access approved cancer treatment and understand your available benefits and cover.

Depending on your benefit option, the Oncology Programme covers approved cancer-related treatment, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, pathology and radiology services, consultations with cancer specialists, supportive medicine and other approved cancer treatments.

How to register for the Oncology Programme

To register for the Oncology Programme, you or your treating doctor must send us a copy of your test results confirming your diagnosis by email to oncology@sabmas.co.za

Before you start treatment, your cancer specialist must send us a treatment plan for approval. We can only cover cancer treatment that has been approved through the Oncology Programme.

How we cover your oncology treatment

Once you have registered for the Oncology Programme, we will cover approved cancer treatment according to your benefit option and the oncology threshold that applies to you.

Comprehensive Option	Essential Option
Each member has a R500 000 oncology threshold that applies over a rolling 12-month period. Approved Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) and non-PMB cancer treatment costs accumulate towards this threshold. Once the threshold has been reached, approved PMB treatment will continue to be covered up to 100% of the Scheme Rate. Approved non-PMB treatment will be covered up toat 80% of the Scheme Rate or the claimed amount, whichever is lower.	Each member has a R250 000 oncology threshold that applies over a rolling 12-month period. Approved Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) and non-PMB cancer treatment costs accumulate towards this threshold.
